Mrs. Iris E. Hamilton McElwain was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 27, 1951. She was the daughter of Thomas A. Hamilton and Mary K. Bigbee Hamilton.
At an early age in life, Iris confessed Jesus Christ and was baptized at Mt. Paran Baptist Church.
Iris received her education in the Indianapolis Public Schools and attended schools #42, #51 and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. She later attended J. Everett Light and received her Dietary Managers Certification.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to Jesse McElwain on April 10, 1992.
Iris owned and operated with her husband Jesse, Iris's Catering and Cakes by Iris's and was very successful. Iris was the "sergeant" of the family always keeping everyone together. Iris enjoyed the holidays, having weekly family gatherings, enjoyed cooking, fishing, singing, music and playing cards. There was nothing she wouldn't do to help others.
Mrs. Iris "Sissy" Hamilton McElwain departed this life on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the age of fifty-eight years six months and fifteen days with her family at her side. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas A. Hamilton and sister, Pamela Hamilton Brown.
Leaving to cherish her loving memories are her husband, Jesse McElwain; daughters, Latonya Hamilton and Catisha Hamilton; son, Carlos Hamilton (Alicia); seven grandchildren that she adored, Sierra Hamilton, Kermit Hamilton, Adrian Hamilton, Carlos Hamilton, Jr., Terry and D'Avante Jacobs; mother, Mary K. Hamilton,; sisters, Elaine Hamilton, Yvonne Hayes and Lisa Hamilton Cerisier (Frantzy); brothers, Eric Hamilton, Aaron Hamilton, Charles Hamilton, Brian Hamilton, Ronald Hamilton (Kim); stepdaughters, Karmen Bedgood, Tonya McElwain, Teresa McElwain; uncle, Kenneth Bigbee; aunts, Laura Mae Cox and Elizabeth Hamilton; nieces and nephews that she loved and help raise, Lashona Lee, Anthony, Elayna, Joshua, Takesha, Coetz, Lil Ron, Tamia and Joshua.
