Mr. Maurice Anthony Guynn, 87, Indianapolis, passed away on July 22, 2010. Born in Indianapolis, as the first child of Morris and Bessie Madison Guynn, he was baptized as an infant at St. Rita Catholic Church in 1923. He graduated from St. Rita grade school and from Cathedral High School in 1941, Magna Cum Laude. An honorably discharged U. S. Army veteran, he returned to Indianapolis, where he continued his government service at the Veterans Administration, retiring as a Rating Board Examiner in 1984. At St. Rita, he first served as an altar boy. He was a charted member of Council #97, Knights of St. Peter Claver (K.P.C.), whose service included: Financial Secretary 1947-65; Grand Knight 1968-71; Charter member of Bernard L. Strange Assembly #14, 4th Degree; Faithful Navigator 1974-76; Supreme Inner Sentinel 1976-77; Supreme Controller 1977-88; Assistant Deputy 1968-70; earned Northern District Certificate for 25 years of meritous service, 3rd Degree in 1972 and Northern District Certificate of Merit in 1976; received Silver Certificate for 25 years of meritous service from 4th Degree 1978; Silver Medal of Merit, National Council 1979; committee member of Indianapolis 1963 National Convention; Certificate of Recognition 1984; inducted into Hall of Fame in 1985; member of the 4th Degree Honor Guard for the Annual Way of the Cross on Good Friday, sponsored by the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus; served as Vice President and President of St. Peter Claver Charities, Inc. and served as Lecturer and member of the Board of Trustees. In 2004, he earned a plaque from St. Rita Church acknowledging him as one at the beginning of the parish for being an "Inspiring Example of Leadership" upon the 85th Anniversary of the Church. He was also a past member of National Council of Catholic Men, serving many years on the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Vice President of the Father's Club at St. Mary's Academy 1965-67. Having graduated from Indiana School of Photography in 1950, he was official photographer for St. Rita church and school. He also attended Indiana School of Business Law and earned a certificate of Completion in Business and Government Law in 1971. He was awarded Certificates of Appreciation from President Gerald Ford and Governor Otis Bowen for recognition of valuable service to the Nation and Selective Service Act on May 5, 1976 and again on May 8, 1976; earned Service Award for 40 years of faithful government service on May 4, 1982 and Commendation Award from the U. S. government on July 20, 1984; a Recognition Award for Service and Dedication from Veterans of Foreign Wars; Department Commanders Distinguished Service Award from AMVETS and served as a Board Member of the Veterans Administration Federal Credit Union; As a past member of the Society of Retired Executives, he conducted retirement workshops for numerous companies. Presented Certificate of Appreciation for service rendered to St. Rita Parish Council 1976-79, he was a member of the St. Rita Bible Class under the direction of renowned St. Rita Church parishioner and former principal of Crispus Attucks High School, Dr. Russell A. Lane; First recommended and commissioned in 1975 for the position of Lay Minister, he was re-commissioned each year at SS Peter & Paul Cathedral on Holy Thursday until an illness suffered in 1996; On Saturday, July 31, there will be visitation and tributes from 10am-12pm with a Mass of Resurrection at 12pm at St. Rita Catholic Church, 1733 Rev. Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue and interment at Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis. His surviving family members include his wife of over 62 years, Bernice Marie Smith Guynn; daughters, Sharon, Sheila Passley and Sandra; sons, Steven and Stanley; grandsons, Jason, Gary, Anthony and Cordell; 2 great grandsons, Christian and Emmanuel; 2 great granddaughters, London and Kennidi; God-Children, Michael Forge, Anthony Markey, Conniejoe, Theresa, Maurice and John; brothers, William (Julia) and Curtis (Yvonne); sister-in-law, Mary E. Guynn, and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by infant son, Vincent Eugene; parents; brother, Robert and sister, Rita Guynn-Douglass.
